Hello all. I received the 70th anniversary 1954 strat this week. It is really good looking but incredibly hard to play. Bending notes is killing my fingers. For a quick review the guitar has a great paint job. Fret work is well done. Feels light but haven’t weighed it. It appears it was set up to factory specs so I’m not sure what to do.

I normally pay for a setup. I think it came with 9s which I play so this may not be an issue, although the B and G string do feel thicker than I am used...

Now that Epiphones are so damn good and well way better than before and hard to imagine how they could do better…..

Did Gibson make a mistake in getting rid of artificial tiers and price tiers essentially making such a great quality product at such an affordable price with their Epiphones.

I always wondered if yeah a lot of these price brackets and prices were just artificial as in extra specs or specs that come on some guitars vs another. Essentially both being pieces of wood with strings...

I know I am making a controversial claim but hear me out, hoping for an experienced builder to comment if my conclusion is right or wrong, here's how I came to this conclusion:
We have heard, watched videos and read that quarter sawn is the best cut of the wood and the most stable. I believed that to be true for guitar necks until recently I watched a bow being made out of raw wood. The prized cut for that is flat sawn, not to be mixed with "plain sawn" which can contain flat and rift sawn...

Thomann and another German retailer have listed the new IBGC epiphones and they look absolutely fantastic! I am so happy to see that they are bringing back the high end specs, and the prices appear to be reasonable (~ $1200). Great specs, rosewood fretboards and custombuckers on the 59, real MOP inlays, nice cases, single piece necks etc. Also, notice that the front binding on these is actually scraped! I think this is what I had always been hoping epiphone would do to bring back something...

I've been having a lot of tone issues as of late as I'm moving up to bigger gigs. Currently trying to work out something with my overdrive pedals. Every time I hear people saying **** like 'set the volume of the amp so it's breaking up, then control your drive with you volume knob."

Like 1: How are you guys not pissing off every sound guy in town with constant volume changes?

And 2: there is no chance I could run my amp past 4 at any bar in my city without blowing everyone out with stage...

I had this 5-6 years ago. An MIJ Fender refinished obviously. I called it the watermelon strat. Tried buying it back from the guy but no joy.

For me it's the Revv Tilt (Shawn Tubbs) Dual. Amazingly versatile.

I will have to say my Wampler Dual Fusion is also mega versatile.

Keeley's popping off lately. I like the new form factor and design.

Blues Disorder - Bluesbreaker/OCD

Super Rodent - SD-1/Rat

Angry Orange - Civil War Big Muff/DS-1W

Kind of an interesting concept to combine the elements of two mostly unrelated circuits that nonetheless have some overlap in application.

Interesting also how Robert Keeley mentions that the DS-1 in the Angry Orange is specifically modeled after the Waza DS-1 as opposed to the ordinary one...

I may be swimming against the tide here, but I want to air some thoughts regarding the whole Epiphone/Squier vs Gibson/Fender-debate. The amount of vitriol that the recent Epi Firebird release stirred here bears testimony to the fact that we have strong opinions - well, here's mine.

I recently thinned the herd. I sold three Gibsons and two custom-built instruments that weren't seeing much use.
Why? My Epihones and Squires have taken their places in my gigging rotation.
Why? I like 'em...

When rock was at its peak, it was rebellious and edgy. Guitar players were long-haired, half-in-the-bag filthmongers who lived in dirty houses with dirty women.

Nowadays, the most visible guitarists are the recently showered, wedding-ringed YouTube guys with fresh haircuts in a clean room with freshly vacuumed carpet and framed Nirvana posters on the wall.

Seems like it's quickly becoming a hobby for establishment types who like to follow rules rather than break them, rendering...

Assuming you enjoyed all and were also competent on all, which would you personally choose to 'be' if you're primary goal was to gig and be 'in demand'?

I know it depends hugely on the music scene in question - but yeah please roll with it!

The physical album format is in trouble. Vinyl records outsold CDs yet again in 2023.

No CD sold over 1 million copies in the US! Only 1 vinyl album sold that many.

I didn't know trading guitars rather than selling them was controversial before yesterday. I got educated.

Now for my master's degree, I would like to have an idea what is the preference of others.

I figure about 90% of folks couldn't care less about how it's gone, just that they got a favorable deal. But for those of you with a preference, what say ye?

Let's say it's a guitar that would sell for $1000. I'm not talking about how you get rid of kindling.
